Detail  [Pages 413-424. Born 1 May 1769 (or more probably in March, as baptised in Dublin on the 30 April) at Dangan Castle, co. Meath, 3rd son of Garret 2nd Earl of Mornington by Anne, eldest dau. of Arthur Hill, Viscount Dungannon. Ensign 73rd Foot, 1787. Landed at Calcutta, Feb. 1797 with the 33rd Foot. Transferred from Bengal to Madras, Sept. 1798. Fighting against Tippoo Sultan. Was briefly in command at Trincomalee, soon left for Bombay. As a Lieut.-General against great odds won Battle of Assaye, 1803 against the Mahrattas. Embarked for England, March 1805]
