Dumfries, by Margaret, sister to the late Admiral Sir Charles Pasley, Bt. A brother was General Sir John Malcolm, ""the historian of India, and ambassador to Persia"". Joined the Royal Navy, and in 1795 he joined the Fox, 32, commanded by his brother Pulteney, then fitting for the East. Was a master's mate when in 1798 with the Sybille, 38 she entered Manilla under French colours and captured 7 ships and 200 men. Became Vice Admiral. In 1827 left the Royal Navy and became Superintendent of the Bombay Marine, which job he performed for 10 years. He reformed its administration and encouraged steam navigation in the Red Sea. Married 1st 4 June 1808 his cousin Magdalene, dau. of Charles Pasley, esq., 1 dau., and 2nd 11 Apr 1829 Elmira Riddell, youngest dau. of Major-Gen. Shaw. 3 sons] |
