Detail  [Pages 204-205. In Upper Portland Place in his 80th year. Born in Feb. 1771 in Bermuda, where his father was acting governor. In was in South Berar by 1787. Became a writer in the EIC, 1791. In 1801 became Accountant General, which he gave up when in 1804 he became a partner in the house of Cockerell & Co., but soon returned to public service, and again became Accountant General. In 1811 went to England because of ill health. Returned to India in 1812, before finally quitting it in 1815. In 1826 became a Director of the EIC. In 1834 and 1847 became Chairman. ""He was ever the strenuous supporter of generous and liberal measures towards the princes and chiefs of India, and foremost in maintaining the rights and privileges of the natives generally""]
