Stirling, who was 39, by Catherine Duncan, who died about 6 years later. Her two sons were left under the guardianship of her two brothers, Lieut.-col. Alexander Duncan, and Adam Duncan, the future hero of Camperdown. In his 17th year he joined the EIC as midshipman on board the Duke of Montrose. ""He made four voyages to Bengal, India, and China; and in 1793 obtained the command of the Melville Castle, out of which three successive fortunes had been already made"". in 1794 he sold out of the service and retired into private life, later to become a preacher] |
