Born 25 April 1775 the eldest son of Samuel Johnston, esq. by the Hon. Hester Napier. In 1802 became Advocate-General of the King's Court at Ceylon. Chief Justice, 1805. In 1810 knighted. He returned to England in 1819 having given freedom of conscience, establishing trial by jury, and abolishing the slave trade. In 1832 was made a Privy Councillor and appointed to its judicial committee so that he could assist with East India appeals. Resided much on his estate at Carnsalloch, kind to the poor. A Vice President of the Royal Asiatic Society. Married in 1799 Louisa, only dau. of Lord William Campbell, Captain R.N., son of John 4th Duke of Argyll. She survives him, 4 sons and 3 daus.] |
