Detail  [At Edinburgh. ""This veteran sailor commenced his career in 1782 in the service of the East India Company; and entered the Royal Navy in 1783, on board the Exeter 64, forming one of the squadron under Sir E. Hughes, on the Indian station. In this ship he was present in the action with the French fleet off Cuddalore, and returned home in the Africa 64."" Served in the Russian navy as a lieutenant. ""In 1791, when a rupture took place between Russia and this country, Mr Stoddart was received on board the Formidable as a midshipman, and subsequently returned to the East India Company's service as a mate, in which situation he remained until 1793, when he again joined the Royal Navy""]
