Brother to late Admiral Sir Robert Barlow. Went to India in 1778. Numerous important offices. In 1803 made a baronet. Governor of Madras, 1809. Returned from India in 1814 with a pension of £1500. Married at Calcutta, April 1789, Elizabeth, dau. of Burton Smith, esq. of Westmeath, by whom 8 sons and 7 daus including George Ulrick, captain 4th Dragoons, who married in 1817 his cousin Hilare, 3rd dau. of Sir Robert Barlow, but died in India in 1824 without issue; Robert, in the Bengal CS; Richard Wellesley, in the Bengal CS; and the fifth child, now Sir John Henry Barlow, who was born in 1795 and is a widower, who is a senior merchant in the Bengal CS] |
