Detail  [Pages 534-536. At Malshanger, near Basingstoke. Born 30 Jan 1785, the second son of Sir Thomas Theophilus Metcalfe, Bt., a Director of the EIC, created baronet in 1802, by Susannah Sophia Selina, dau. of John Debonnaire, esq. and widow of Major Smyth. Made a writer in the EIC, Oct 1800. Numerous offices, became a member of Bengal Supreme Council, 1827. In 1822 succeeded his brother Sir Theophilus John Metcalfe as baronet. Provisional Governor General, Feb 1835 to March 1836. During his office he introduced uniform money for all the presidencies, abolished chowkies in Bengal, and freed the press from restrictions. This last step made him popular among the natives but angered the Company and hence he had to return home, resigning Feb 1838. Lieut. James Metcalfe was his natural son]
