Born Ipswich, entered navy in 1778, in actions with De Suffrein in the East Indies, in Indian waters 1790-92, escorted a convoy to India in 1794, in capture of Negapatam and Trincomalee, escorted fleet back, 1796, to East Indies again in 1803, pursued French ships, escorted fleet to China and back to India in 1804, merchants of Bengal and Madras each gave him 500 guineas in thanks]
