At the Adenza, near Leghorn, whither he had repaired for the benefit of his health, aged 64. Elder son of Sir John D'Oyly, Bt. who was a senior merchant in the Bengal Establishment by Diana, widow of William Cotes of Calcutta, esq. and daughter of William Rochfort, esq., brother to Robert, 1st Earl of Belvidere. Sailed for India in 1796 at age of 16 to join Bengal CS. Married 1st his cousin Marian Greer, coheir of William Greer, esq. of Keyhaven, Hants. She died without issue at Calcutta soon after. Became a Collector of the Customs at Calcutta, and a senior member of the board of customs, salt and opium, and of the marine board. He married 2nd in India Elizabeth Jane, eldest dau. of Thomas Ross, Major, Royal Artillery, by Isabella Macleod. No issue. Returned to England with his second lady in 1838 with a pension of £1000. Gifted artist, wrote books. Became baronet in 1818 on death of father, succeeded by only surviving brother, Sir John Hadley D'Oyly, also of the EIC CS] |
