Detail  [Pages 426-428. At Burton lodge in his 64th year. Baron Keane of Ghuznee in Affghaunistan. 2nd son of the late Sir John Keane, of Belmont, co. Waterford, created a baronet in 1801, by his first wife Sarah, sister of John Keiley, esq. of Belgrove. Ensign, 1793. In 1833 he succeeded Sir Colin Halket as commander in chief at Bombay. In Oct. 1838 he received authority to organise and lead a force into Scinde to cooperate with the army in the North West Frontier under Sir Henry Fane. In December Sir Henry resigned, and Keane took over overall command. Was much censured for the hauteur with which he treated the Ameers of Scinde, said to be more lucky than skilful, ""charged with having almost invariably underrated the services of the Company's troops"". Was thanked by the EIC in Dec. 1829 and awarded a pension of £2000 p.a. for his own life and that of the two successors to his peerage, to which he was raised a week earlier. Parliament thanked him, Feb. 1840. Memorable victory of Ghuznee. Married 1st 1806 Miss Smith, 2nd dau. of the late Lieut.-Gen. Sir John Smith, several children, and 2nd Aug. 1840 Miss Charlotte Maria Boland, youngest dau. of the late Lieut.-col. Boland. His pension and peerage goes to his 5th child and eldest son, Edward Arthur Wellington, who was aide-de-camp to his father when in command of the Army of the Indus, and is now an army Major. For details of his will see Dec. 1844 issue, page 428]
