Detail  [Pages 653-654. Son of Archibald Campbell, Lieut. in the army, by Margaret, dau. of James Small, a Captain in the army. ""He entered the service in the year 1787, by raising the quota of twenty men for an Ensigncy in the 77th regiment, and embarked with that corps in the spring of the following year for the East Indies."" In various battles in Madras. In 1801 due to ill health returned to Europe. In 1821 became commander of HM 38th Regiment and joined it at the Cape in 1822, proceeding with it to India. Involved in the Burmese campaign. ""At the termination of the Burmese war he was appointed Commander of the Forces in the ceded provinces on the coast of Tenasserim, and at the same time had the honour of being Civil Commissioner in relation to the affairs of the kingdoms of Burmah and Siam"". Became ill, left India in 1829. In Aug. 1839 was offered the post of commander in chief, Bombay, which he accepted, but had to refuse it due to illness. Married Miss Helen Macdonald, of Garth, co. Perth, 2 sons & 3 daus. ""The elder son, the Rev. Archibald Campbell, a chaplain in India, died unmarried in 1831.""]
