Detail  [Pages 198-200. Born 14 Sept 1774, 2nd son of William Henry 3rd Duke of Portland by Lady Dorothy Cavendish, only dau. of William 4th Duke of Devonshire. Entered the army in 1791 as an Ensign. In April 1803 sailed for India as Governor of Madras, returned to England in January 1808. Went out to India as Governor-General in 1827, he returned in 1837. Statue to him erected in Calcutta, see Nov 1840 issue, pages 558-559]
