South African Commercial Advertiser (1856)
Date transcribed | 2011-00-00 | Transcribed by | Sue Mackay - Marianne Mansfield | Comment | Sue McKay has kindly authorized us to publish her transcriptions of Family History-related data from the Announcements in the South African Commercial Advertiser. This is because they include very many references to personnel in the service of The East India Company en route to or from India or on furlough in S. Africa, which offered a more temperate climate. Also included are many officers and soldiers of the British Army regiments who may well have served in India shortly before or after serving in South Africa. |
| Publication Date | Saturday 1 November 1856 | | Event Date | 31 October 1856 | | First Name(s) | 5 passengers | | Rank or Occupation | for Calcutta | | Event | Arrival | | Full Entry | Saturday 1 November 1856: The Royal Mail Steamer 'Tynemouth', the second of Lindsays line, arrived in Table Bay on Friday morning from Dartmouth in 55 days. She has the following passengers for the Cape:- Sir Robert STANDFORD; Rt Rev Dr MORAN (RCB); Rev A BAMPORT and F BAMFORT, (RC Priests); Capt And Mrs FROST, Messrs UPPLEBY, DOWLING, HAYTER, MOORE, PENNY and COURTNEY; Misses NORDEN and SINCLAIR; Dr WILLIAMS, Deputy Inspector General of Hospitals; Major BATES and Mr HAYWARD (45th Regt.); Lieut CLAYTON (13th Regt.); Dr STREET, (Medical Staff); Capts HOLDER and MARSHALL; Capt FRASER (60th Rifles) and son; Mr FACCIOLIE (Bandmaster), wife and two children; Mrs MASSIE. Besides these she has seven passengers for Mauritius, three for Point de Galle, three for Madras, and five for Calcutta. We believe that the length of the 'Tynemouth's voyage is attributed to her small horse-power, as, it is said, she cannot make greater progress than five knots an hour under steam alone. The mail for Mauritius and India, by this steamer, closes this afternoon, at 4 oclock. | | Reference | CO53/11 at the National Archives, Kew, London |
