Description  Brother of Dr. David Begg. Came out to India in 1848. Dr. Begg had intended to keep James in the office at Bathgate and Co., Calcutta, but he preferring a country life, James went to to Rajkund Factory to work under Andrew Crawford. Next, went as manager to Bekonpore; afterward got charge of Japaha Factory, then belonging to MacKillopp Stewart and Co., 1859. Got charge of Kontai Factory, 1861. Next, retired home. Purchased a share in Dowdpore, but �sold shortly after as he was alarmed at the production of the alazarine dyes.� Returning to India, James managed Seeraha Factory for a year c.1873. Retired home, and died c.1896-97. Left two sons, �one in Messrs. Begg Dunlop and Co.�s office, the other a manager of a tea garden in Assam, and two daughters who married Calcutta merchants.�
