| Surname | Toomey | | Forename | George | | Chapter | Tirhoot and Its Inhabitants of the Past | | Sub-title | Biographical sketch: George Toomey | | Page nos. | 282 | | Description | Came out [to India] to his uncle, James Cox, who was managing Dholi, 1856. During the Mutiny of 1857-58, Toomey was one of those who, with others, started to retake Mozufferpore after the civilians and the rest of the residents had been ordered away by Mr. W. Taylor, Commissioner of Patna. Toomey took up the management of Dholi when Cox left, 1861; was most successful there. When Cox purchased Kanti and Motipur in partnership with Kenneth MacLeod, Toomey first went to manage at Motipore. After Cox and MacLeod sold Motipore to Thomas Fraser, Cox and Toomey went on to Kanti. Toomey gradually bought up all the shares, except a four annas share held by the Honourable T.M. Gibbon, this share having since been purchased by Toomeys widow. Toomey was a most successful planter and a worthy nephew of his uncle. Toomey was a capital host, a good and kind friend. Retired home to England, where he lived for many years: His death was sudden, and many mourn the loss of good old George as a good friend and companion. | | Indexer Notes | (1) An anna was a one-sixteenth part, for example, of a rupee or a parcel of land. (2) See also index entries for: Toomey, G., sen.; Toomey, Geo.; and, Toomey, Mr. |
