He then went to manage Hattowrie Factory, taking with him Sunful Raie, whom he made jemadar. Made money [at Hattowrie] and went home [to England or Scotland] once or twice. After returning from his last trip home, things went badly and he had to give up the indigo factory at Hattowrie. He arranged to buy Nawadah FactorySunful Raie was to help him with the money but, at the last moment, failed his old master: It was a terrible blow for poor old Mr. Anderson, for he died soon after, people said, of a broken heart. Anderson was buried at Nawadah Factory. One of his daughters married Captain Aitkin, an officer in the army, who so gallantly defended the Baily Guard at Lucknow [during the Mutiny of 1857-58], while his wife was one of those locked up in the Residency. The other daughter married Captain Williams, who also did good service during the Mutiny, and afterwards commanded the Moshee Serks Pioneers. Andersons son was employed with the Revenue Survey under Messrs. Chapman and Wyatt, 1848, and for a time, in the Opium Department. | | Indexer Notes | (1) Please note that there were three, perhaps four, men named John Anderson, who were indigo planters in Bengal during the nineteenth century. The subject of this index entry appears to be someone other than John Soojee Anderson or John Anderson of Chitwarrah. (2) A jemadar, or Jámádár, was a chief or leader of people, often in the army, the police or in the customs. |
