(2) Biographical note: Tippoo Saheb: Also written, Tippoo Saib. Was the Sultan of Mysore. Born in 1749. Son of Hyder Alee, (or Aly); succeeded Ali on the throne, 1782. Prosecuted the war which he had previously waged against the English until a treaty of peace was concluded at Mangalore, 1784. Invaded the territory of the Rajah of Travancore, an ally of the British, 1790; soon after, the British formed an alliance with the Mahrattas and took the fort of Bangalore, 1791. Forces of General Abercromby joined those of Lord Cornwallis, 1792: advanced against Seringapatam, when �Tippoo consented to renounce one-half of his dominions to the allies, give up two of his sons as hostages, and pay a sum of more than £3,000,000. He nevertheless endeavoured in secret to incite the native princes against the English government, and solicited aid from France.� Was besieged in Seringapatam by the British forces under General Harris: was killed in the assault, 1799.
