| Surname | MacLeod | | Forename | Kenneth | | Chapter | Tirhoot and Its Inhabitants of the Past | | Sub-title | Biographical sketch: Kenneth MacLeod | | Page nos. | 229 | | Description | Was a shrewd hard-working Highlander: soon became manager of Seryiah, one of the finest factories in Tirhoot. MacLeod had many friends in Calcutta, and several in the indigo districts, among those Mr. John Mackenzie, who was a fellow Highlander from the neighbouring island of Lewis [in Scotland]. It was a pleasure to see these two old friends meet with a hearty Gaelic greeting. Few understood the meaning of it, but the hearty way in which it was given made ample amends for that. After a time, MacLeod left Seryiah, to take up his abode at Telpa House, Chupra. At first, found difficulty in putting enough money together to pay his expenses to Calcutta by the Grand Trunk Road. Was able to do the old Bettia Raja a good turn, and they were fast friends every after. Used to enjoy an occasional trip to Calcutta. Was asked to superintend indigo concerns that were not progressing well, including Dulsing Serai for the firm of Abbot and Company: old Mac put Tom Martin in charge, and the consequence was a record season such as has never been beaten before or since. Also superintended Attur factory for Messrs. Gillanders, Arbuthnot and Company: D. McInlay was a partner in that firm and also from the Isle of Lewis, so the two Highlanders were always great friends. | | Indexer Notes | (1) A Raja, or Rájá, was a king or a prince, or a title for private persons of high rank. (2) See also index entries for MacLeod, K., and McLeod, Kenneth. |
