Surname  Becher
Forename  H.
Title  Captain
Chapter  Tirhoot and Its Inhabitants of the Past
Sub-title  Biographical sketch: Captain Henry Becher
Page nos.  216
Description  Had an old East India Navy list where his name was mentioned as Lieutenant Henry Becher, deceased, opposite which in big scrawly letters were written Not yet, thank God H.B. Came up-country [to Bengal], probably in the early 1830s. Started as an indigo planter at a factory to the north-east of Tirhoot called Beerpur. Was very fond of carpenter work, and employed some fifty carpenters. Becher was a bit of a fire-eater, and though [the author, Minden Wilson] never heard of his having fired or been fired at, he had a pair of brass-barrelled pistols that were the terror and amusement of the district. His old syce was Byro.
Indexer Notes  (1) A syce was a groom or horse-keeper. (2) The author, Minden J. Wilson, recounted a couple of yarns about Captain Becher, in which Byros wise sayings played a part [pp. 216-217]. (3) See also index entries for Becher, Captain, and Becher, Henry, Captain.
