I take charge of Shahpore Mircha--Journey and visit to Calcutta--Outbreak of the Mutiny | | Page nos. | 192-195 | | Description | Travelled to Calcutta, with two friends, setting out Christmas Day, 1856. Drove to Bankipore, and found their dak gharrie or palkee carriage, waiting. Reached the Jehanabad dak bungalow close to Gyah, by 10 p.m. Stopped at the Gyah dak bungalow at breakfast. From Gyah, the party was propelled by coolies to the Grand Trunk Road. At the Grand Trunk Road, changed to horses. Drove past the noted Dunwah Pass. Next morning found the party among the Santal Hills. It took three days and two nights to reach Calcutta, but the journey had to be timed so as to arrive at Ranigunge early enough to catch the train to Calcutta, which then only ran as far as that place. Arrived at Howrah, the East Indian Railway terminus, 9:00 a.m. Took the ferry-steamer across the Hooghly. | | Indexer Notes | (1) A dak, or dák, was a post or relay point along a road, for palanquins or carriages; alternatively, a post-office.
