Description  Met the author, Minden Wilson, during Wilson�s visit to Kanti in the New Year, 1848: �He was quite a gentleman of the old school, and most courteous in manner.� Becher had been in the Honourable East India Company�s Navy, �which he had left tolerably well off. Unfortunately, he invested all his fortune in indigo, and lost it, and was at that time managing a saltpetre manufactory, near my cousin�s [Russell Crawford�s] place for Mackillop, Stewart and Co., of Calcutta.�
