Description  Manager of Dowlutpore Factory c.1847. Was �highly amused at the author�s [Minden J. Wilson�s] simplicity in believing his bearers� complaints that he had given them a bad rupee, for, of course, they had swindled him.� Wilson spent �two very pleasant days� with Mr. and Mrs. Ronald, who were �most kind� to him. Mr. Ronald was one of the many victims of the mutiny [of 1857-58]: Ronald �had left indigo and gone into the Sonthal Commission.� He and Gregor Grant were paying a visit to some officers in charge of a detachment of sepoys, stationed near the Grand Trunk Road. Having dined, they were passing the night with friends, when shots were fired. Grant escaped into the jungle, where he was hidden by a Pasi woman. Ronald was tricked into turning back and was bayonetted by a sepoy.    
Indexer Notes  (1) The Pási were an aboriginal tribe in the North-West Provinces; they tended pigs and laboured in the fields, and were employed as watchmen to catch thieves. (2) A sepoy was a soldier, especially a native Indian. The term was also commonly applied to policemen and peons. (3) See also index entries for �Ronald, R.�, and �Ronald, Robert Edington�.
