Description  The East India Company entered into a contract with James Prinsep, �to increase the quantity and improve the quality of indigo,� 1779-80. Prinsep �wrote to Lord North, in a letter, dated 25th January 1780, that he wished to introduce �Indigo[,] sugar and tobacco into Great Britain from the East Indies� and in a subsequent letter to the same nobleman, he stated he had �with the utmost trouble and expense� collected round him Europeans bred to different arts and science, as well as the most intelligent mechanics and planters of the East.�
