(Ranald Macdonell's "Letters of Reminiscence")

In 1843 (29th December) my regiment was engaged in the battle of Maharajpore in Gwalior, with the Maharattas.   Two standards were captured by the 10th Cavalry, the bronze star medals distributed to us for this action were made from the guns, twenty-eight in number, which we took from the enemy.

My old bearer, Kudgoo followed me into the battle.   After the charges I found him at my back, mounted, and carrying a supply of brandy in case of need.   He served me well for twenty-seven years, and I pensioned him when I went home on leave, but he never returned to my service, for his sad fate was to be "thugged" when on his way down-country to meet me on my arrival from England.
