(Ranald Macdonell's "Letters of Reminiscence" 1843 - 1854)

"The next nine years were of no special interest, but they were not altogether uneventful, for in that space of time we had no fewer than five transfers.

After the battle of Maharajpore we returned to Meerut for a while, and were then sent to Nowgong, and subsequently to Jhansi.   Our next move was to Mhow, and three years later we were transferred to Kartarpur on the Sutlej, where we remained for nearly five years.

In 1853 I became Major, and came home after an absence of twenty-seven years.   On arriving in England I crossed over to Antwerp to visit my late wife's sister, and after that I went for a trip to Ireland, and took the opportunity to buy a good horse - an Irish hunter.

I had volunteered for the Crimea, (where the war was going on then,) but my services were not accepted, government informing me that they had already a sufficiency of field officers.   Some months later they wrote offering me a regiment of  Bashi Bazooks, but by that time I had arranged to return to India, and moreover was engaged to be married to Eleanor Barclay;  I therefore declined the honour.

Our marriage took place near Elgin, N.B. on the 18th of May, 1854.
