Comment

Sacred to the Memory of Major-General John Montrsor Colonel Commandant of the R.M. Lt. Infantry, who died at Draycott Lodge, Kempsey, the 18th of Novr. 1873, aged 90 years. For upwards of 70 years he bore his Sovereign's Commission doing gallant and faithful service. In 1801 he fought in the attack on the Spanish fleet off Cadiz: In 1803 he was engaged in the North Sea: In 1804 in H.M.S. Raisonable in the attack of the gunboats off Boulogne, in 1805, in Calder's action and defeat of the united fleets of France and Spain: and in the action Augt. 16th with the 'Topaze' French frigate: In 1806, he shared in the attack and capture of the Cape of Good Hope; and in the attack and defeat of the Spanish, and capture of Buenos Aryes, also in its defence being taken prisoner with the garrison; In 1811, he was in several actions with the Danish gunboats: In 1813 he was employed off the coast of France and in America: and as Adjutant in the attack and defeat of the American army on the road to Baltimore in the attack on the American forces at Farnham church, he commanded the advance. In 1815, at the attack on the American rifle forces at Point a Petre and at the capture of that fort. He also served at St. Helena during the last 9 months of Napoleon 1 and was present with the troops at his interrment. "Blessed are the Pure in Heart".
