Within this enclosure are interred the remains of George Matcham formerly of Ashfold Lodge in this parish Esquire, the only surviving son of Simon Matcham, Esq., Superintendant of the Marine of the East India Company, and Member of the Council of Bombay, by Elizabeth, his wife, the youngest daughter of Hugh Sidwell, Esq. of Exeter, Esq., descended from the family who derived their name from the manor of Biowellan in the parish of Newton St. Cyres in the County of Devon. He married Catherine, youngest daughter of the Revd. Edmund Nelson, M.A., Rector of Hilborough and of Burnham Thorpe in the County of Norfolk and his sister of Vice Admiral Horatio Lord Viscount Nelson, K.B., after a long life passed in the exercise of private virtue and benevolence. He died at Kensington 3rd Feby. 1833 in the 79th year of his age, leavung to his numerous issue the invaluable example of a well educated enlightened independant English gentleman. A good neighbour. An affectionate husband. A tender father and a sincere Christian. Here also are interred Francis Griffith Matcham, 4th son of George and Catherine Matchan, born in 1796, died at Ashfold 15th Feby. 1808, aged 12 years. And Horatio Nelson Matcham, their 5th son, born at Bath in 1803, died Novr 11th 1821, aged 18 years. (Further family members are mentioned)
