Born on 25th February, 1890, probably at Simla.

London Gazette of 28th July 1916 records him being in the 105th Mahratta Light Infantry. He was the son of Henry Irwin, architect, the superintendent of works in Simla from 1881 to 1888, and one of 16 children. He married Meta Escott Haughton on 11th December, 1915.
