Sacred to the Memory of Major-General Richard Goodall Elrington, C.B. Born at Low Hill in this County 16th June 1778, Deceased 2nd August 1845. He entered the army at the age of 14, and served during the French Revolutionary War in Holland, at Famars, At Valenciennes; He was shot through the body while bearing the Colours of the 14th Regiment before Dunkirk: was noticed for conspicuous gallantry before Guelders Maselm in Lord Cathcart's despatches, and again severely wounded at St. Vincent's in the West Indies. Having joined the 47th Regiment, he served with it in action at Maldonado, Monte Video and Buenos Ayres in South America, and subsequently at Ras-el-Khaima in the Persian Gulf he took part in the capture of Palampore, Deesa, Kirjah and Vishanpore: was engaged with his regiment in the Pindaree War, in the suppression of the mutiny at Barrackpore, and in the Burmese War. He was actively employed abroad with brief intervals of repose during 53 years, amidst the varied fortunes of a soldier's life, he was as remarkable for his animating cheerfulness under privations and reverses as for his military ardour in the service of his country. ALSO Louisa Augusta, wife of the Rev. Francis Duncan born 16th June 1799, Departed this Life 10th June 1835. Second daughter of Majr. Genl. Elrington and his wife Hannah, daughter of Thomas Colby Esquire of Torrington, Devon.
