This tablet has been placed in this cathedral by Lord Curzon Viceroy and Governor of India, honorary Colonel of Lumsden�s Horse in honour of those members of the first corps of British volunteers from India who have fought and died for the Empire.
Lumsdens Horse raised by Lt Col DM Lumsden from British subjects of the Queen in India left Calcutta 250 strong in Feb 10th 1900 to take part in the South African War under the command of Field Marshal Lord Roberts.
They lost by death in action Major Eden Currie Showers at Houtnek 30 April 1900? [South Africa], Trooper Robert James Clayton Daubney, Trooper Henry Charles Lumsden, Trooper Robert Upton Case, Trooper Arthur Fred Franks.
Trooper Arthur King Meares at Vet River 5 May 1900 [South Africa]. Sergeant Walter Larkins Walker at Boxburg 20 Dec [South Africa].
By death from sickness Trooper Montague Beadon Follett at Jberg? 7? July?, Cp. John Martin Haliday Maclaine [McLaine ?] at Pretoria 29 August?
These sons of Britain in the East fought not for praise or fame. They died for England and the least made greater her great name.
